Sail Away on the Four Cs

Connection, Communication,

Conflict, Commitment

The past few years have been, to put it lightly, challenging to relationships.  We are seeing an unprecedented need for qualified couples therapists as several cultural and global themes clashed.  Our culture does not and has not traditionally taught healthy emotional expression and moderation.  Meanwhile, a global pandemic left many couples spending weeks in isolation with one another, forced to face challenges they were unfit to resolve effectively.  The result of this unexpected and unprecedented cultural collision has left many couples in great need of education, skills, and support.  To address this need, my colleague and mentor Mercy Dennis, LMFT-S and I put our heads together to try to figure out how we could put our education and experience to good use.  We realized that, through our decades of combined experience as couples therapists,  similar issues arise again and again.  We identified 4 specific challenges  and researched tirelessly to find the most up to date research and information available for how to best address each of these challenges.
We are excited to announce the culmination of our combined extensive education and experience- a workshop specific to the challenges inherent in modern relationships.  Whether you are currently in a relationship or not, you will learn skills you can implement immediately in all your relationships; whether work or family or intimate partner.  I hope you join us as we embark on a metaphor heavy 12 week relational excursion.  A play on the word "relationSHIP," we invite you on a voyage to center yourself in healthy partnership.

Who is this class for?

If you are not sure if this class is for you, do a relationship self-check-in.  If currently single, consider these questions from a current challenging friendship, familial relationship, or previous relationship:

  • Are you afraid of "rocking the boat" and hesitate to bring up issues?
  • Do you feel like you are drowning in conflict or disconnection?
  • Do you find yourself becoming overwhelmed in certain situations and wanting to abandon ship or lash out?
  • Do you find yourself responding harshly to your partner; or are you on the receiving end of harshness?
  • Are there frequent misunderstandings between you and your partner?
  • Do you feel like you and your partner are oceans apart?
  • Do you feel smothered by your partner's need for attention or affection?
  • Do you sometimes feel like your partner is talking down to you, as if you are a deck hand?
  • Do you find yourself getting overwhelmed with situations and wanting to sail away and hide?
  • Does your partner's intensity intimidate you?
  • Does your partner withdraw from you and leave you feeling as if you're on a deserted island?
  • Do you feel the same issues continue to come up?

If any of the above is true, this class might be for you!

What will I learn in this class?

Whether you are currently in a relationship or not, this class can help you:

  • Learn how old patterns interfere in current situations, AND what to do about it.
  • Identify your fight or flight response (spoiler alert: there are other responses than just "fight " and "flight").
  • Learn the 5 realms of intimacy.
  • Identify your (and your partner's) "losing strategy" in conflict.
  • Learn relational speaking and listening.
  • Know how to identify a "bid" for attention, affection, and more.
  • Realize the importance of rituals of connection.
  • Become clear about your dreams and visions for relational satisfaction.

How this class works:

Each week you will either:

  • "Anchor for Provisions"  The first, third, fifth and other odd weeks, you will receive an email with links, notes, exercises and other relevant information relating to the following weeks topic.
  • "Port of Call" These weeks, we will meet for a 90 minute zoom session; during which we will provide psycho-education, demonstrate skills, allow for an opportunity to practice skills, and engage in group discussion.

You will walk away from this course with concrete skills to implement immediately in all of your relationships!
